For many smaller dwellings, the right setup is not about buying the biggest tank possible. It is about matching capacity, access and pumping equipment to the way the property is actually used. A weekend bach with two people has very different needs from a full-time tiny home with a family, regular visitors and a washing machine.

What holding tanks do

A holding tank is a sealed tank that stores wastewater until it can be emptied by an approved waste contractor. Unlike a septic system, it is not designed to treat wastewater on site. Its job is containment.

That makes holding tanks useful where soil conditions are unsuitable for an on-site disposal field, where the site is too small, where the building may be moved later, or where a simple and contained solution is preferred. Start with how the dwelling is used

Some properties collect toilet waste and greywater together. Others use separate arrangements. There is no one answer for every site, because plumbing layout, council requirements, available treatment options and planned occupancy all matter.

A combined tank can keep the arrangement straightforward, with all wastewater directed to one secure collection point. Separate systems may offer more flexibility in particular situations, but they also add design decisions and maintenance considerations. Location matters as much as tank size

A holding tank needs a safe, stable position with room for installation, inspection and pump-out access. Think beyond where it will fit today. Consider turning space for a truck, the route of the suction hose, slopes, gates, retaining walls and future landscaping.

A tank tucked behind a shed may seem out of sight and out of mind, but it is not useful if a contractor cannot reach it without crossing a garden, dragging hoses through living areas or reversing down a narrow driveway. The ground beneath the tank also needs attention. Tanks require proper support so they remain level and secure. A poorly prepared base can lead to movement, pipe stress and drainage problems. Tank lids and inspection points should remain accessible but protected. They should not be hidden beneath decks, permanently covered by paving or blocked by parked vehicles. This is basic practical planning, but it is often missed when a small site is being finished quickly.

The real cost is more than the purchase price

A larger tank may cost more initially but reduce the number of service visits. On the other hand, installing more capacity than the property needs can tie up money unnecessarily and make delivery or placement harder. The sensible answer depends on usage, site access and the local cost of pump-out services.

Likewise, a portable or modular arrangement can be a strong option when a tiny home, cabin or worksite may move in future.
