A wastewater pump that does not start is inconvenient. A pump that does not stop can be far worse, risking an overflow, odour and unnecessary wear on the system. A float switch is a simple device, but it works in a hard environment. It sits around moisture, moving wastewater, grease, toilet paper and changing water levels. That is why a switch can be perfectly sound one month and snagged, fouled or worn the next. Regular testing is not complicated, but it must be done safely.
What a wastewater float switch does
The float switch tells the pump when to run and, in some systems, when to stop. As the wastewater level rises, the float moves into its start position and closes the circuit to the pump. Once the level drops, it returns to its stop position and the pump shuts down.
Some pumps use a tethered float, which swings upward as the tank fills. Others use a vertical float that travels up and down a guide.
