A wastewater hose that looks connected can still cause a messy, expensive problem. A slight low spot can hold waste, an unsealed fitting can leak smells, and the wrong hose can collapse or split under pump pressure. The best connection is not necessarily the shortest one. It is the one that suits the wastewater source, the pump or gravity setup, the approved tank or disposal point, and the site conditions. Get those basics right before buying extra fittings or cutting hose.
Start by identifying the wastewater path
Wastewater systems usually carry either greywater, blackwater, or a combined flow. Greywater comes from showers, basins, washing machines and kitchen sinks. Blackwater includes toilet waste and needs more careful containment, pumping and disposal arrangements. Even where a hose connection looks similar, the hose type, pipe size and site rules may not be.
Trace the route from the fixture outlet to the final approved point. In a portable system, that may be from the dwelling outlet into a holding tank, then from the tank to an authorised pump-out or disposal connection. In an RV, it may be from a waste outlet to a dump station. Do not assume a connection approved for greywater is suitable for toilet waste.
Before installation, check your local council requirements, the tank manufacturer’s instructions and any conditions for the property. Choose hose and fittings that match the job
A garden hose, light-duty drainage hose or whatever is in the shed is not a wastewater hose. Wastewater can contain solids, detergents, fats and chemicals that demand a hose with suitable wall thickness and chemical resistance. It must also cope with the way the system moves waste.
For a gravity-fed line, use appropriately rated drainage hose or pipe with smooth internal walls where practical. A smooth bore reduces places where solids can catch. Corrugated hose can be useful where flexibility is essential, especially on mobile setups, but its ridges can retain debris. Keep it as short and straight as the layout allows.
For pumped wastewater, use hose or pressure pipe rated for the pump’s output. This matters because a hose that survives gravity drainage may not cope with repeated pressure cycles. Check the internal diameter as well as the fitting size. Restricting a pump discharge with an undersized hose can reduce flow, increase strain and make blockages more likely.
Fittings should be made for wastewater use and sized to match both the outlet and hose. Seal the joint without crushing the hose
Push the hose fully over the fitting tail so it passes all barbs, then secure it with a corrosion-resistant hose clamp sized for the outside diameter of the hose. Two clamps may be sensible on a critical pumped connection, with the screw housings positioned on opposite sides.
Do not overtighten clamps. A clamp should hold the hose securely without cutting into it or deforming a soft fitting. After tightening, tug the hose firmly by hand. If it shifts, it is not ready for service.
Threaded fittings need the correct seal for their thread type. Use a suitable thread sealant or tape only where the fitting manufacturer recommends it. Tape will not fix crossed threads, cracked plastic or a connection that is simply the wrong size.
Plan the run: fall, support and access
Gravity needs fall. As a practical rule, the hose or pipe should run continuously downhill to the tank or drainage point, without dips that create standing waste. The exact fall depends on the pipe diameter, flow and installation, but the aim is simple: no bellies, no uphill sections and no sharp bends where solids can settle.
Support the run at regular intervals. A hose left on rough ground can be crushed by tyres, rubbed through on gravel, chewed by animals or pulled loose when someone shifts the dwelling. Use suitable clips, saddles or supports, and protect any section that crosses a driveway or is exposed beneath a trailer.
Keep joints accessible. Burying a hose connection may look tidy on day one, but it makes leaks and blockages harder to find. If a connection must be enclosed, provide an inspection point or access panel. The same applies at the tank inlet and outlet: you should be able to see, clean and service these areas without dismantling half the setup.
Avoid tight kinks. Flexible hose has a minimum bend radius, and forcing it around a sharp corner can pinch the bore. If the route needs a turn, use a proper elbow or a broader sweep. Fewer bends mean fewer places for solids to slow down.
Venting and tank connections matter just as much
A wastewater line is not only moving liquid. Air needs to move as water enters or leaves the system. Poor venting can cause slow drainage, gurgling fixtures and unpleasant odours. Do not wait for the first full shower, washing load or toilet flush to find an issue. Test the system with clean water first. Fill each fixture gradually and watch the entire hose run, every clamp, every fitting and the tank inlet.
Look for drips, sweating around threads, hose movement and slow drainage. Then run a larger volume of water to mimic normal use. A connection that stays dry under a trickle may reveal a problem once the line is flowing at capacity.
